So last night I went to visit a friend in the hospital who just had a baby.  Her little girl was a whole pound bigger than Genni was when she was born.  Holding that little baby last night though, I had a hard time remembering Genni ever being that small (and she's only 4 months old!).  So today, I found some videos of when Genni was a newborn and thought I'd post a couple so that other people can remember how tiny she was.

I miss my little newborn baby.  But then she talks (which has gone from the cooing noise, to more of a grunt) to me and smiles at me and does so many cute things that she couldn't do 4 months ago, and I'm so happy that she's growing so well.  So here are a few recent videos of our baby.  Brandon really misses his little girl when he's at work, so these are mostly for his benefit.  I recognize that they might be kind of boring to other people.

Also, I've been trying to get the baby's room ready for her to start sleeping in at night.  It's simple, but I really like the way it has turned out.  Finding reasonably priced blackout curtains was a huge frustration for me.  I finally found some really cute ones from target for cheap, but after reading reviews and doing some research, found out that the lining releases some sort of toxic gas when heated that can cause birth defects and cancer.  Needless to say, I sought other options.  Then I found out that you can buy blackout lining!  So I found a tutorial online, bought some lining and cheap cotton fabric and made my own...for about $15.  They are far from perfect, but they were a bargain and really quite easy to make, and they match the room better than any I could find online.  I haven't hemmed them yet because we're probably moving this summer, so I wanted to leave them long so that hopefully I can fit them to the new room.  So that's why the bottom of them looks weird.  Anyway, here are pictures of her room, for anyone who cares.

She LOVES her toes!

And I LOVE those eyes!  She's such a sweet baby.

Reflections on 2011

I love celebrating the New Year.  I love looking back at the previous year and reminiscing about the great moments, the trials, the failures, the successes, and then looking ahead at how the coming year will be different.  It feels like a fresh start, and I love it.

We celebrated New Years Eve at home and had a great time.  We made Dijouzas for dinner (my favorite) and had sparkling grape juice, put Genni to bed early (she'd had a rough day) and Brandon and I were able to sit and talk about the past year.

This year was a big one for us.  It was one year ago on January 2nd that we found out we were pregnant.  We had just returned home to Boston from our Christmas vacation in North Carolina.  While in North Carolina, we had decided to visit New Orleans to better make the decision of whether or not to accept the job offer Brandon had received.  We enjoyed our visit much more than we had anticipated and were starting to lean towards accepting.  I'd had suspicions that I might be pregnant, but really didn't think I was.  I had decided that I would go get a pregnancy test the following day though, just to be sure.  It was Sunday morning and we were getting ready for church.  I decided to check the bathroom and just make sure I didn't have a pregnancy test already.  And I did.  So, without saying anything to Brandon (that's how confident I was that I was not pregnant), I took the test.  I continued getting ready and almost forgot to check it.  But then I glanced over at it on my way out of the bathroom and was shocked to see the word "pregnant."  Without a "not" in front of it.  I took a few moments to try to wrap my head around the idea, failed, and decided to just go tell Brandon.  This is how that conversation went:

"Hey Brandon?  You might want to sit down."
"Why?"
"Because...I'm pregnant!"
No response.  I showed him the proof and say it again.  Finally he says, "What?!"

We hugged and just looked at each other, trying to wrap our heads around this new information.  The rest is a bit of a blur.  I just remember us realizing that we needed to get back to getting ready for church because our ride would be there to pick us up at any moment and deciding that we would talk about it more when we got home.  The shock wore off before that though.  In fact, it wore off about 20 minutes into sacrament meeting when the first speaker referenced parenting.  I'll never forget that moment.  We looked at each other and both started smiling (the kind of smile that feels too big for your face).  Neither of us could stop smiling, I'm sure we looked ridiculous.  Sitting through church was torture after that because I had realized I was going to be mom in a matter of months, and I wanted to get home and call my mom and dad and sisters.  (Also, I was fasting, so I was especially hungry.   I did not complete my fast that day.)  That was the day we found out about Genni.  Within the week we made the decision to accept the job in New Orleans, and just like that our lives took a couple of big turns that were both exciting and unexpected.

The rest of the year revolved around those two bits of news.  Pregnancy consumed my life for 9 months, and then Genevieve arrived and continued to consume my life (much more pleasant on this side of it though).  Brandon graduated from law school, studied for and took the bar, and began his career in Oil and Gas Law in New Orleans.

It was an amazing year for us, and we are so grateful for the wonderful blessings we've been given and for the great support and strength we've found through our family and friends.

Growing...and some of the pains that come with it.

NOTE:  I know this looks like a lot of text, but there are pictures, I promise!  Just stick with it...or scroll down.  Whatever.

I know I say this every time I post, but our little Genevieve is growing so fast!

I learned the hard way yesterday that she can now roll from back to front.  No, I did not leave her on a raised surface from which she rolled off (thank goodness).  I put her in her crib to look at her mirror while I packed.  I went in the other room and heard her scream...that kind of scream that makes a mother's heart jump into her throat.  I ran into her room and she had flipped over and her leg was stuck between the spindles.  Time to get a bumper!  I really should have been more careful, I guess.  She's been working on the back to front roll-over for awhile now, but she had always gotten stopped at her side and hadn't figured out how to move her arm out of the way.  Anyway, this is the latest and biggest milestone that Genni has mastered, and I must admit, I wish she had waited another month or two.

She has also become completely fascinated by her hands, which is so cute!  The other morning, I went in to check on her because she had been asleep for much longer than she normally sleeps in the morning.  She was not asleep.  Instead, she was lying in her bed with one arm in the air and was watching her hand as she opened and closed it.  She is starting to grab things (her favorite object is my hair) and as soon as she has managed to grab hold of whatever she was reaching for, she frantically stuffs it in her mouth.  This is a really cute new development and always makes me smile.  However, when it's my hair that's heading for her mouth, I'm a little less impressed.  And since I don't want my daughter to eat chemicals, I've had to stop using any hair products, which has made my rarely done hair to begin with...well, it just looks awesome now.

On a less happy note, Genni had her first shots a couple of weeks ago.  She screamed, I cried, it was awful.  I was very nervous about the shots to begin with and had done a lot of research.  So, as usual, when the pediatrician came in and asked if I had any questions about the immunizations, I pulled out my list.  He was either impressed or thought I was crazy, but his response was, "Wow.  You've really done your homework on this."  After listening to her heart more than normal, he told me that he had detected a heart murmur and wanted to send us to the hospital for further testing.  This was not the best week for baby and me.  I was a wreck and Brandon and I tried to keep each other calm until we knew more.

The next day we spent several hours at Children's Hospital, where the nurses are surprisingly not very competent when it comes to babies.  The cardiologist finally came in and listened to her heart.  He said that he was almost 100% sure it was an innocent murmur and we had nothing to worry about.  (He repeated this several times, which makes me think that I looked as stressed out as I was feeling.)  He told us that we were still going to get an echo and an ultrasound to makes sure, but again, I had nothing to worry about.  So we go in for the ultrasound and the tech turns on Spongebob to entertain my TWO MONTH OLD BABY!  Two reactions:  A. I don't want my baby to start watching TV for as long as possible; and B. Spongebob?  Is there anything else that could slow her development more?  (I'm very sorry to anyone who likes Spongebob and thinks it is an educationally sound show.  It isn't.)  I asked her to turn it off, or at the very least mute it.  She refused, and we moved on.  When she started with the ultrasound, Genni--who obviously was not a fan of the goo--started to fuss.  So the tech asked me to please keep my baby from crying.  What?  We were not getting along.  I told her that Genni doesn't take pacifiers and she was getting hungry, so there wasn't a lot I could do at that point.  She called a nurse in to help, who thought it would be a good idea to blow bubbles at Genni.  But as it turns out, infants don't care about bubbles and actually really dislike things popping and landing on their face!  Can you tell I was less than impressed by the staff?  The tech threatened to stop the ultrasound if I couldn't get my baby to stop fussing, so I lay down next to her and nursed her through the rest of the ultrasound.  Unfortunately, they were training a bunch of people at the hospital that day, so a group of people came in to observe.  Awkward.

Finally they got the pictures they needed.  After looking at them, the cardiologist came in looking much less positive.  He informed me that he was right about the innocent murmur, that it has a 90% chance of closing and even if it doesn't ever close, it will have no effect on her life.  But...he thought he saw a second hole and to better diagnose, he needed to do more testing.  So back to the crazy ultrasound tech we went for more pictures and inevitable frustration.  Eventually, we got through that and found out that she does have a hole at the bottom of her heart.  The good news is that it doesn't affect her life for now, and it has an 80% chance of closing on its own before she turns two.  The bad news is that if it hasn't closed by then, they will have to fix it  either with surgery or with medication.  So we'll go back next September to check on it, and if it hasn't started to close by then, we'll continue to have it monitored every three to six months until she's two.  It wasn't the best news, but pretty good and we feel confident that she will be fine and it will work itself out.

So that was a rough week for us, but we're getting back to normal now, and Genni's sleep patterns are finally getting back on schedule.  Just in time for us to head to Idaho for Christmas!  We are very excited, but a little nervous about going from the 70 degree weather we've been experiencing here to 30 degree weather (down to 5 degrees at night).  And on that note, I need to go finish packing.  Here are a few pictures of the past few weeks (due to the awful week and screwed up schedule, there aren't as many as usual).  NOTE:  Captions are by Brandon.

Many of you may have gotten this one on our Christmas card.

Genevieve waxing philosophical during her photo shoot.  Her dad was very proud.

Beautiful Christmas dress, beautiful smile...and Brandon.

Genni helped Brandon with the house cleaning one Saturday morning.  She worked very hard, as you can see.

Our little Christmas tree.  We skipped the toilet paper tree this year in favor of three little Christmas trees that I think are supposed to go on the side of your driveway.  Our big family gift this year was a welcome mat.

This is from the lights at City Park in New Orleans.  No reindeer around here...we use gators.

And now, for your viewing pleasure, here are some videos of Genevieve.  It may seem like we're a little overly enthusiastic about our daughter on this blog...hopefully these videos will help you understand that we are actually pretty restrained considering the level of sheer awesomeness our baby displays on a regular basis.

Our baby is TWO months old!

Genni turned 2 months old this month, and hit several milestones.  She learned and quickly mastered how to roll over from front to back (which has made tummy time much less productive).  She can now push herself up so that her arms are straight and hold that position for several seconds.  She found her thumb!  Only twice though, and we're a little worried she won't find it again.  She has SO much to say and smiles at her mom and dad A LOT.  She has grown quite a lot, but as we are very delayed in her 2-month check-up, I don't have numbers to prove that.  AND...(drum roll)...she started sleeping through the night!!!  (Insert hallelujah chorus.)  We love our baby Genevieve more and more everyday, and here's why:

Hello thumb!

Sometimes Genni has a very strong opinion about being in her car seat, but on this particular day, she was thrilled to be in it.

I love this face.

...and this one.

Isn't she just adorable?!  I can't believe how much personality she has already.

This was the month of trying new toys.  She was NOT a fan of the bumbo at first, but she has come around and will at least tolerate it now.

She liked the exersaucer a lot more than I had expected (especially considering that her feet don't touch the ground yet).  We had fun naming the colors and she figured out how to make noise with the little spinney thing (What? That's what it's called.).

And she discovered the baby in the mirror.

Here are a few videos taken in the past month.  Looking for her thumb, talking to her mom, and dancing with her dad.

Thanksgiving!

The Zeller family came for Thanksgiving, which was more great family and more great food!  Brandon's mom came on Tuesday night, so we were able to spend Wednesday together, doing some Christmas shopping at the outlets and getting things ready for Thanksgiving dinner while Brandon, his dad, and brothers played basketball.  We had a great Thanksgiving holiday and loved having family with us.

Clint and Daren waiting for dinner to be ready.  Being the first time I've ever hosted a Thanksgiving dinner before, I was a little jealous of them.

As it turns out, it is incredibly difficult to get all of the food done at the same time and keep it all warm until everyone is sitting down for dinner, but Susan, Brandon and I did our best and I think it was pretty close.

Turkey Bowl!

Daren was very hungry and in his defense, we were starting dinner much later than we had anticipated, so smiles were hard to come by at this point.

Friday we spent the afternoon walking around the French Quarter and had Johnny's Po-Boys for the first time.  It may look like a hole in the wall, but there is a reason there is always a line out the door, they were delicious!

Jackson Square

Friday night, Brandon and his family went to the new Muppet Movie while Genni and I stayed home and went to bed early.  The next day the family watched a soccer game together and then the Zellers packed up their car and started their long drive home.  We were so glad they made the trip to spend Thanksgiving with us!

Millie's Visit

The week after Dad and Debbie left, my sister Millie came to visit and we had a blast!  The great thing about my sisters is that we don't have to do a whole lot to have A LOT of fun together.  We went to the French Quarter and had some more amazing food and introduced Millie to Beignets, which we love.

Mostly though, we just hung out and she helped me run errands that had been on my "to do" list for weeks, which gave Millie and Genni some great bonding time.

She has the most kissable cheeks (Genni, not Millie)!

While Millie was here, we convinced her to take a few family pictures for us:

I LOVE this one!

She had pretty much had it at this point, and consoling her was a two-man job.

Again, with the oh-so-kissable cheeks!
